Born in Chatou, Yvelines, Île-de-France, on 10 June 1880.

In 1898-1899 he attended the Eugene Carrière studio in Paris.

In 1904 Derain studied at the Académie Julian in Paris.

Derain’s work was largely influenced by his acquaintance with Maurice de Vlaminck and later Henri Matisse.

He associated with the Fauvists and then, under the influence of Paul Cézanne, adopted early Cubist style.

From the 1920s he shifted to Neoclassicist style.

Derain died in Garches, France, on 8 September 1954.
