Born in Hamburg, Germany, on 10 September 1933.

In 1952 Lagerfeld moved to Paris, where he studied at the school of the Syndicate Chamber of Parisian Couture.

Between 1955 and 1974 Lagerfeld worked for various fashion houses, designing for them clothes collections.

In 1974 he founded his own Karl Lagerfeld Impression line.

In the 1970s he worked as a stage costume designer, including for La Scala, Milan.

In 1983 Lagerfeld became the Chanel art director.

In 1987 Lagerfeld took up photography, publishing several books of his photo works.

In 1996 Lagerfeld won a prize of the German Society of Photography.

In 1998 he opened the Lagerfeld Gallery in Paris.

Karl Lagerfeld lives in Paris.
