Born in Yelizavetgrad (Kirovograd) in 1898.

In 1921–1924 attended the workers’ faculty of Moscow’s VKhUTEMAS.

From 1924 to 1930 studied under P.Y. Pavlinov, N.N. Kupreyanov, V.A. Favorsky and D.S. Moor at VKhUTEMAS (VKhUTEIN).

Joined the Association of Revolutionary Artists (AkhR).

Awarded the honorary title of People’s Artist of the USSR (1973).

Full member of the Soviet Academy of Arts.

A graphic artist, Kanevsky was among the most popular children’s book designers.

Died in Moscow in 1976.
