Born in St. Petersburg in 1891.
In 1909 studied drawing at A.I. Titov's studio, in 1910-1911 under F.A. Rubo and then under M.D. Bernshtein and L.V. Sherwood at the School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture.
Between 1912 and 1916 attended lectures at the Higher School of Painting, Modelling and Architecture of the Academy of Arts.
From 1909 exhibited his works.
From 1918 to 1921 taught at the State Free Arts Workshops.
A member of the 'Four Arts' group.
Held the honorary title of a People's Artist of the Russian Federation.
Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts.
Did paintings and graphic works, including book illustrations.
Died in Leningrad in 1967.
